SONAR Ocean Supply/Demand provides an unprecedented level of visibility into the ocean container markets through various data points.

On the Supply and Demand page, users are able to view a set of analytics that help users understand volumes, Rejections, lead times, transit times and port pair delays. Data can be viewed in daily updates, 7-day rolling or 14-day rolling. The data sets on this page are described in detail below:
Ocean Booking Index-
An index representing the daily volume of twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) volumes being booked with ocean container lines for a specific country of origin, or a specific port within a country of origin. The daily value is based on the initial booking date. Depicts only new Bookings and not amended bookings, indicating a better measure of total new bookings. This is indexed to January 1st, 2019 using a baseline of 1,000,000 for all global lane combinations. Each specific lane derivative’s index value is additive, meaning all lane index values aggregated would comprise the 1,000,000 baseline value.
Ocean Volume Index –
An index representing the daily volume of twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) volumes being booked with ocean container lines for a specific country of origin, or a specific port within a country of origin. The daily value is based on the initial booking date. Depicts new and amended bookings, indicating a better measure of total market activity. This is indexed to January 1st, 2021 using a baseline of 1,000,000 for all global lane combinations. Each specific lane derivative’s index value is additive, meaning all lane index values aggregated would comprise the 1,000,000 baseline value.
Ocean Booking Rejection Rate –
This index represents the percentage of booking volumes being declined/rejected by ocean carriers on a specific trade lane for that day. This includes new bookings and cancellations. The primary reasons for the ocean carriers declining/rejecting volumes is due to lack of equipment or vessel space.
Ocean Booking Index – Lead Days –
The lead times are calculated using the amount of days between the initial booking date when it was confirmed and accepted by the ocean carrier, and the estimated date of departure when looking at 0 days for the vessel that the booking’s volumes are attached to. Or the estimated date of arrival when looking at 7, 14, 21 or 28 days for the vessel that the booking’s volumes are attached to.
Ocean Transit Time –
The transit times are calculated using the amount of days between the vessel’s departure date and the vessel’s arrival date.
Project44 Ocean Port Pair Delays –
This is a weekly average of vessel days delayed between published transit times and actual transit times. These Project44 Ocean Container Port Pair Delays indicate sailing schedule compliance and service reliability at a lane-level on a monthly basis.
