Benchmarking

WHAT IS IT?

Benchmarking helps shippers evaluate lane-level performance by comparing their transportation activity with SONAR market benchmarks and their own planned network activity.

The Benchmarking section contains two primary views:

  • Lane Opportunities
  • Volume Compliance

Together, these views help users evaluate pricing, capacity, lane difficulty, tender acceptance, and planned versus actual transportation activity.

WHAT DOES IT TELL ME?

Lane Opportunities

Lane Opportunities helps identify where pricing and capacity conditions may create opportunities or risk.

Lanes are grouped into four Risk & Efficiency Quadrants:

  • High Risk Zone: Lanes where pricing and service conditions indicate additional risk and should be evaluated closely.
  • Savings Opportunity: Lanes where the shipper is paying above market and market conditions may provide an opportunity to reduce transportation costs.
  • Efficiency Zone: Lanes where pricing and service performance are aligned well.
  • Carrier-Dependent Zone: Lanes where favorable pricing may depend on strong carrier relationships or existing capacity commitments.

Users can also review:

  • My Rate
  • SONAR Contract and Spot market rates
  • Delta to Market
  • Lane Score
  • Tender acceptance
  • Transportation spend
  • Volume
  • Mileage
  • Pricing alignment
  • Market conditions
  • Guidance for the lane

Volume Compliance

Volume Compliance compares planned volume with actual volume to help users understand whether awarded or expected freight is moving as planned.

The view highlights:

  • Planned Volume
  • Actual Volume
  • Surge or Shortfall
  • My Rate
  • Delta to Market
  • Tender Acceptance
  • Lane Score
  • Lane-level guidance

Users can select a lane and review the carriers servicing that freight, including carrier rate, acceptance, volume, rate variance, risk level, and recommended guidance.

Together, the Benchmarking views help answer:

  • Where am I overpaying?
  • Where could low pricing create service risk?
  • Am I sending carriers the volume they were expecting?
  • Are carriers accepting the freight being tendered to them?
  • Which lanes should I review before my next procurement event or routing guide adjustment?

WHO IS INTERESTED?

Benchmarking is most useful for:

  • Transportation procurement teams
  • Carrier managers
  • Transportation analysts
  • Routing guide managers
  • Strategic sourcing teams
  • Operations teams
  • Anyone preparing for a bid, mini-bid, procurement review, or carrier conversation
