LTL Monthly Cost per Hundred Weight (CLTL, SLTL, MLTL, TLTL, LLTL)

WHAT IS IT?

Monthly indices based on the Cost per Hundred Weight for 4 NMFC freight class groupings and 5 different mileage bands. The tickers are built using acronyms for length of haul + ltl + class group and are available at the national and regional level.

I.e. midhaul class 70 cost per hundred weight would be MLTL70.

The class groupings are as follows:

  • 50 – classes 50-65
  • 70 – classes 70-85
  • 92 – classes 92.5-110
  • 125 – classes 125-500

The lengths of haul are as follows:

  • C – (city) shipments moving less than 100 miles
  • S – (short haul) shipments moving between 100 to 250 miles
  • M – (mid haul) shipments moving 251 to 450 miles
  • T – (tweener) shipments moving 451 to 800 miles
  • L – (long haul) shipments moving 801+ miles

The granularity groupings are as follows:

  • USA – US National
  • URNE – Northeast
  • URSE – Southeast
  • URMW – Midwest
  • URWT – West Coast
  • URSW – Southwest

These indices tell you the general pricing direction for each class and mileage band combination nationally, and outbound from different regions of the United States of America. Looking at pricing trends can help you understand how competitive the LTL market is and help forecast general rate increases or whether or not it is a good time to go to bid.
