LTL Monthly Rate Per Ton Mile (CLTL, SLTL, MLTL, TLTL, LLTL)

WHAT IS IT?

Monthly indices based on the median rate per ton mile for 4 NMFC freight class groupings and 5 different mileage bands. The tickers are built using acronyms for length of haul + ltl + class group.

I.e. midhaul class 70 median rate per ton mile would be MLTL70.

The class groupings are as follows:

  • 50 – classes 50-65
  • 70 – classes 70-85
  • 92 – classes 92.5-110
  • 125 classes 125-500

The lengths of haul are as follows:

  • C – (city) shipments moving less than 100 miles
  • S – (short haul) shipments moving between 100 to 250 miles
  • M – (mid haul) shipments moving 251 to 450 miles
  • T – (tweener) shipments moving 451 to 800 miles
  • L – (long haul) shipments moving 801+ miles

WHO IS INTERESTED?

Anyone who is involved in less than truckload transportation pricing — shippers, procurement teams, brokers, LTL carrier pricing teams, financial analysts and service professionals

WHAT DOES IT TELL ME?

These indices tell you the general pricing direction for each class and mileage band combination nationally. Looking at pricing trends can help you understand how competitive the LTL market is and help forecast general rate increases or whether or not it is a good time to go to bid.
