Estimated Diesel Cost Per Mile (MPG)

WHAT IS IT?

The Estimated Diesel Cost per Mile (MPG) dataset translates national and market level diesel fuel prices into an easy-to-understand cost per mile metric for truckload transportation.

This dataset is calculated using the Diesel Truck Stop Actual Price per Gallon (DTS) divided by an assumed average truck fuel efficiency of 7 miles per gallon. By converting diesel prices from a per-gallon cost to a per-mile estimate, MPG provides a clearer view of how fuel prices directly impact the cost of operating a truck.

Rather than interpreting fuel prices in isolation, this dataset connects diesel costs directly to transportation economics, making it easier to understand how fuel volatility influences freight rates and carrier operating costs.

Calculation

Estimated Diesel Cost per Mile (MPG) = Diesel Truck Stop Price (DTS) ÷ 7 MPG

WHO IS INTERESTED?

Carriers, Brokers, Shippers, Market Analysts and Financial Teams.

This dataset is valuable for anyone who needs to understand how fuel costs impact transportation pricing and profitability.

WHAT DOES IT TELL ME?

The Estimated Diesel Cost per Mile dataset provides a clear view of how fuel price movements translate into real transportation costs.

With MPG you can:

  • Quickly quantify fuel’s impact on trucking costs without needing to convert gallons into operational costs manually
  • Track the real cost pressure on carriers as diesel prices rise or fall
  • Better understand freight rate movements, since fuel typically accounts for a significant portion of trucking operating expenses
  • Monitor transportation cost inflation using a metric that directly ties energy prices to freight movement
  • Available at the national and market level

By converting diesel prices into a cost per mile, MPG helps translate energy market volatility into a transportation metric that is easier to analyze, compare, and incorporate into freight pricing decisions.
