The next month and a half is expected to be the most active of the year from both a demand and rate perspective. Memorial Day kicks off the summer shipping season, which runs through July. The added layer of broker liability could make this a significantly more volatile period from a rate perspective as brokers redefine their vetting processes. It may be too early to see a definitive shift in the market, as it will be difficult to separate existing tightness from any new dynamics introduced by the ruling. The bottom line is that there is no reason to expect June to be an easy month for procurement or transportation management teams, and they should plan accordingly. This market appears to have more staying power than previous cycles, thanks to the added layers of regulation and now liability. Procurement processes will be evolving in the coming months, which will at minimum limit the ability of low-cost capacity providers to participate.
